Peter’s Royal Navy Career

Peter joined the Royal Navy on 17^th December 1941 when he would have been 18 years old. He always maintained that this only came about because he went with a friend of his who wanted to join the Navy but who ended up failing the medical because of flat feet but Peter didn’t. How he ended up taking the medical was never explained. As can be seen in on the following page we have a complete list of his Ship and Shore postings:

We always knew that Peter joined one ship in the USA so we assumed it was the Glasgow sometime in June or July 1942, he also often spoke of the convoys to Russia again this must have been on the Glasgow between January 1943 and March 1943, Emerald doesn’t appear to have been in the USA or on the Russian Convoys. Also we always knew that he had taken part in D-Day, 6 June 1944 but as both ships took part he could have been on either ship, we now know of course that he was on H.M.S. Emerald.
